Manifesto

Imperial College Union is more than just the bar you use on a Wednesday evening, the Union has other trading services on campus as well as at Charing Cross and until recently at Wye. These services include the Union bar, Da Vinci's, dB's, the Union shop and the Union newsagents. As DPFS, I will be here to listen to your qualms and suggestions with these services. Do you want something to appear in the Union shop? Your clubs hoodies perhaps? Do you want to see better service in the bars? Cheaper drinks prices? If I am elected I will be open to any suggestion you can throw my way.

The Union contributes around £360,000 to your Clubs and Societies each year but gives you very little useful information when training you to spend this money. As DPFS I would like to see the Chairs and Treasurers of your clubs and societies using the new online forms system. This saves much of your Chairs time, Clubs and Socs Finance Officers time and also means that your transaction page will update far earlier. I would oversee the necessary alterations to the finance training to ensure this is implemented correctly. I would also continue the "Club Surgeries" on Wednesday afternoons in SAC which have been increasing in popularity throughout this year.

The Union shop continues to lose money year on year, a termly trading forum would serve to combat this and problems with the other commercial services run by the Union. It is important the Union Newsagents is brought on brand as soon as possible. I would follow through on the plans to implement this.

I would like to address the seriously falling standards in the catering's hygiene and preparation of vegetarian options. There are many issues surrounding the bar, such as faulty equipment. I would endeavour to replace anything which is not fit for purpose. It is my belief that a tiered wage system would increase the efficiency of the bar staff and encourage them to hold their position for longer. I would like the Union to offer more opportunities for students to work on campus, perhaps offering students more part time work in the Union shop.

The full availability of the union services is not well known. The website continues to run out of date opening hours and publish false and misleading information. I would endeavour to achieve better forms of communication and advertising with you as students so that you are aware of when and what services are available to you and above all for what price!

One of the more satisfying jobs the DPFS has is the organisation of the Summer Ball, I would like to begin putting things together for the 2009 ball as early as November 2008 and keep ideas rolling on throughout the year. I would be very much open to suggestions from students with ideas to introduce new entertainment and would equally like to hear what you thought has worked well in the past.
